Station Road Planning Inquiry -Sainsbury’s Superstore

Following the sad death of the Planning Inspector, Mr. Trevor Cookson, in April 2013, before the original Inquiry completed and as St. Modwen & T&W have not withdrawn the application for a Sainsbury’s superstore on the greenfield site off Station Road, the Planning Inspectorate have now set new dates for the re-run Inquiry.

A Preliminary Inquiry Meeting (PIM) is to be held on 17th September 2014, in the ballroom of The Royal Victoria Hotel in Newport, commencing at 2 pm.

Briefly, the PIM is where representatives for all the parties seek to persuade the Inspector what evidence needs to be heard at the full Inquiry so that the Inspector has all the relevant information needed to make a decision. At present, due to both St. Modwen and T&W insisting that large amounts of evidence will be required to be heard by the Inspector, the full Inquiry is scheduled to start on 20th January 2015, to run for 16 days i.e. effectively 4 weeks and the Inquiry does not sit on a Monday.

We can only hope that at the PIM meeting on 17th September 2014, the Inspector significantly reduces the 16 days or, better still, St. Modwen and T&W stop this terrible waste of taxpayers money and withdraw the application.
