LAST MINUTE MOVE BY TELFORD & WREKIN PLANNERS ANGERS NEWPORT

Newport residents urged to act now to protect their Village Green application from the proposed Sainsbury’s hypermarket

Eagle eyed but puzzled residents noticed in the Shropshire Star last Friday August 10, that Telford & Wrekin Council were mysteriously ‘consulting’ on ‘appropriating’ land for planning purposes, by producing

a Legal Notice EH/00847 – buried at the bottom of page 49 – for a proposal for the fields off Station Road: the very same site for which the Sainsburys’ superstore planning application has already been ‘called in’ by Secretary of State Eric Pickles back in July and thus taken out of the hands of T&W by the Secretary of State.

This land is in fact the subject of a Village Green application initiated by a local resident and opposed by Telford and Wrekin Council : and a public inquiry is to be held in Newport from 24 September 2012 at the Royal Victoria Hotel . The effect of this proposal by Telford & Wrekin, would, by being ‘appropriated’ effectively prevent the land from being classified as a Village Green. Inserting the notice in the Shropshire Star, ( but not in the local Newport Advertiser) during the main holiday season and so close to the Inquiry, when it could have been published at any other time is seen as a calculated move to stop the Inquiry before it has even begun:- the “consultation” period is just 21 days] at a time when most people are on holiday and unlikely to have seen the notice or understand its implications.

ACTION IS NOW NEEDED BY EVERYONE WHO CARES ABOUT THE STATION ROAD FIELDS (ADJACENT TO HUTCHISON WAY )

Anyone who has previously written to T&W Council on the village green application or who would like to see the land retained for ‘ recreational and leisure purposes ‘ in its present form, must write to T&W saying that they object to the ‘appropriation’ and wish to see the land retained in its present usage ideally with Village Green status. The letter must be with T&W no later than 31 August 2012. The letter must quote reference EH/00847 and be addressed to- Jonathan Eatough ,Assistant Director; Law, Democracy and Public Protection, Telford and Wrekin Council. Civic Offices, Coach Central.Telford TF3 4HD.

Letters should also be copied to the Leader of the Council Kuldip.sahota@telford.gov.uk , to whom the decision making will be given in the final instance, according to the Cabinet report of July 26.

Borough and town councillor, Adrian Meredith said ‘ I am appalled that T&W should try and go behind the backs of the people of Newport in this manner to try and defeat residents’ wishes. I urge all residents to please write to object: -it is disgraceful that our ‘ cooperative’ council should behave in such an underhand way to its own residents and tax payers and it makes one question what ‘localism’ really means .’
